Aztec Market

Wednesday 3rd March 2010

During the spring term, Year 5 and 6 children have been studying the curriculum through our Aztec topic. We have learned about where and how they lived, including a look at Aztec society. Aztecs believed in and worshipped many Gods, sometimes making human sacrifices to please them, and so have a fearsome reputation. However we also looked an altogether less fearsome side of life for the Aztecs.

They traded with all the other tribes who lived around the Aztec empire and life for them included many thriving and colourful markets. Year 5 and 6 children studied the kinds of things the Aztecs would have made to trade with and recreated their own Aztec market.

Each child had 5 'cocoa beans' to spend wisely on products they wanted to buy.

We made posters to advertise each stall...

 Stalls sold masks...

...jewellery...

...and head-dresses.

Lots of bargaining took place!
