Reading Champions

Reading Champions is a way for primary and secondary schools to get more of their boys enjoying reading. Schools invite boys and men who are influential in school to become Reading Champions. These Champions encourage other boys to get into reading by running their own positive reading activities and promotions. Readers can be nominated for bronze, silver and then gold awards, which provides recognition for their achievements and helps keep them motivated.

Ambleside Primary School started to get involved with this programme in September 2009 and during this year we have recognised 39 reading champions: 4 adults, 25 boys and 9 girls.  Due to the hard work of staff, children and all involved, we decided to take part in the annual national Literacy Trust competition and we are proud to announce that Ambleside Primary School has been awarded,

Reading Champions School of the Year!

The panel said:

"Thank you to all those schools that entered the School of the Year competition for 2008-2009. The standard of entries was extremely high and there were several schools who would all have been worthy winners. "

They were particularly impressed by the way that Ambleside Primary School had used the Reading Champions framework as the basis for getting everyone reading a wide range of reading materials, and how they had gone about involving parents. The boys, staff, parents and members of the community had all got onboard and helped to make this a truly fantastic project.
