Homework

Reading at home

At the beginning of the academic year each child is tested on their reading age and given a reading book appropriate for their level. This will be accompanied by a reading diary that we expect to be filled in at least 3 times a week by an adult from home. It is important for a child to experience a range of texts and we would like to encourage parents to read a book to their children at bedtime. This will expand their vocabulary and hopefully result in a love for books.

Books will be changed regularly and we encourage parents to monitor their child’s improvements.

Children visit the school library regularly and have access to a range of books, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

Homework

In Phase 2 each child will receive 1 piece of writing homework per week. Please support your child in the completion of this piece of work by:

·         Talking about what you can see in the picture.

·         Talking about what you could write about.

·         Starting each sentence with a capital letter.

·         Leaving finger spaces between words.

·         Ending a sentence with the correct punctuation ( . ? !)

·         Supporting your child in sounding out the word to support spelling.

·         It is ok for your child to make spelling mistakes, but all Bear and Rocket words need to be spelt correctly.

Spelling in Phase 2

We use a combination of Bear words and Rocket words. These words are taken from the 300 most commonly used words in the English language. Some of these words will also be linked to our phonics programme.

In Year 1 we start by testing each child on their ability to spell Bear 1. Once they are secure in their spelling of this set of words they progress through to Bear 7. Once each child has reached Bear 7 they then move onto Rocket words, starting with Rocket 4.

Children are tested on a regular basis within school and they are expected to learn and practise their spellings at home. When writing at home children are expected to spell their Bear and Rocket words correctly.

We would encourage you to familiarise yourselves with our Numeracy curriculum and practise using number in practical day to day situations. I.e. counting how many red cars you see, looking at prices in the supermarket, telling the time and practise number formation.
